Thread: Nosebleed Question

    Default Nosebleed Question

Ok, any quick and easy cureall for nosebleeds?

I know, I'm kidding. I wish. But does anyone have anything that does help? We've had surgical cautery (several times) and we currently use saline sprays, KY and humidifiers everywhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The cautery helped a little for Kato, and humaete P after every bleeding.
Now she's on profylaxys, she gets humaete P 3 times a week. My husband learned to give it, and this summer on a camp organised by the hemofylia-organisation, she learned to do it herself...

Before we also tried almost everything... but nothing helped her, exepted giving humaete P...
Sorry, I wish I could (it would help Kato also ), but I can't give you any other advise...

Man those nose bleeds are some of the WORST issues faced for some of our vWD bleeders. My Son's Pediatric Hematologist once told us that taking a raw piece of salt pork and tying a string on it and put it up the nostril is a very effective treatment to stop bleeds. (The string is used for removal) Um... the idea was kind of a bit more "alternative" than what I wanted to try on my Son... but I have heard this treatment from several bleeding disorder professionals. So I would imagine it could work.

I think however... it really has to do with what type of epitasis is going on. Is it a bleed in the front part of the nose...or in the back portion more of the septum area? With my Son's Type2a vWD we have been told that Stimate is more effective treatment for the front nose bleeds but that if it is from the Septum area and a lot of the blood is draining down the back of the throat to treat it early and pretty aggressively with Humate P. For the most part this has worked for us... but as you know... every bleeder and every bleed is different.

    Good Luck!

    Denise

We've heard the same and had pretty much the same thoughts.

I actually saw a kid with salt pork in his nose the one time Jeremy was in the hospital for something else - it looked pretty nasty. Like Denise mentioned, a lot comes down to the location of the nosebleed. I think the salt pork trick is probably similar to packing the nose - it really only helps if the bleeding is from the front of the nose. I can't imagine shoving salt pork up my kid's nose far enough to help a nosebleed further back. In fact, I can't imagine Jeremy even letting me try to put something like that even close to his nose

Thanks for the advice. We've done the salt pork thing, but it's been awhile. Our problem is that Austin is bleeding from both the front and back, so we can't pack it or there's no where for the blood from the back to go except down his throat.

We're waiting on a surgical date, so we just have to keep him moist and infused in the meantime.

    Thanks for all the advice!
